A total of 39 accidents involving Yangon Bus Service (YBS) buses were reported in Yangon during the first seven months of 2026, resulting in 19 fatalities, according to the Yangon Region Transport Regulatory Committee (YRTC).
The YRTC said that between 1 January and 20 July 2026, YBS buses were involved in 39 traffic accidents. The incidents claimed the lives of 19 people and left more than 30 others injured.
Authorities said that, in addition to taking disciplinary action against YBS drivers responsible for the accidents, the relevant bus operating companies and the drivers involved had continuously provided compensation to victims and their families.
The YRTC also stated that YBS drivers found responsible for fatal accidents are subject to permanent dismissal. In addition, authorities are preparing to introduce stricter financial penalties for traffic violations and serious accidents.
Efforts are also being intensified to improve road safety by increasing awareness campaigns and education programmes for both bus drivers and passengers, encouraging greater compliance with traffic regulations.
Meanwhile, commuters in Yangon continue to face difficulties, particularly during morning and evening rush hours, due to an imbalance between the number of YBS buses in service and the growing number of passengers.
Nationwide, the Road Transport Administration Department (RTAD) reported on 24 July that 1,686 road traffic accidents occurred during the first half of 2026, resulting in 932 deaths and 2,371 injuries.
