The Mae Sai district chief in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand, has warned Thai nationals travelling across the border to Tachileik, Myanmar, to strictly comply with Myanmar’s laws and local regulations and to avoid any behaviour that could violate the law, according to Thai media reports.
According to a notice issued on 27 July, Mae Sai District Chief Warayut Khuambun said that Thai citizens travelling to Tachileik for tourism, shopping, or personal matters should familiarise themselves with Myanmar’s laws in advance and strictly observe them throughout their visit.
He advised travellers to avoid entering restricted areas, violating traffic regulations, engaging in gambling, becoming involved in illegal businesses, taking photographs in prohibited locations, or participating in any activities that contravene Myanmar’s laws or local regulations.
The notice also warned that anyone found violating Myanmar’s laws could be arrested, detained, questioned by the Myanmar authorities, and prosecuted under the country’s legal system.
Authorities further urged travellers to carry valid identification and travel documents at all times, comply with instructions issued by both Thai and Myanmar officials, and immediately seek assistance from Thai officials stationed at the border checkpoint or the relevant government agencies in the event of an emergency.
According to the notice, the advisory is intended to enhance the safety of people crossing the border and to prevent potential legal problems arising from violations of the laws of the neighbouring country.
